``The Potential of Mean  Force''

 I will define it and illustrate it with numerous examples in statistical 

mechanics, showing that it is an idea that pervades much of the 

subject. I will then end with the calculations of the potential of mean 

force in the models of hydrophobic attraction that I have worked on 

with Paolo De Gregorio and Marco Barbosa.
